You Don't Have to Shrink to Get Hired.
June reminds us of whatās possible when people donāt shrink. We have a lot to learn from Immigrant Heritage Month, Juneteenth, and Pride.
So letās talk strategies for showing up authentically and safely in the job search process. Because your story, values, and uniqueness CAN support your search. Here are three example strategies. Try what resonates, ignore what doesn't, and trust yourself to know the difference:
1. Don't network, build real relationships. Here are some guiding questions that center shared purpose, not transactional performance:
-
āWhoās doing work I deeply respect?ā
-
āWhat conversation would actually feel energizing right now?ā
-
āWhat questions do I want to ask another human being in this field?ā
2. Show your heart in cover letters. The social impact world welcomes cover letters that are authentic, values-driven, and personal. Here are some of my examples that have landed interviews.
3. Ask the real questions in interviews. When they ask āDo you have any questions for us?ā ā this is your moment. Ask about what actually matters to you. Here's a guide to get you started.
You don't have to be everything to everyone. The right social impact org will see you as the asset you already are!
In solidarity,
Katie
