Networking is often sold as the way to land your next job.
But it sucks. It feels performative and transactional and...isn't the job search already hard enough?
Here's how to release the pressure. Ditch the word networking altogether and focus on building authentic relationships instead. And the good news is - you already know how to do that! So next time you reach out to someone:
✨ Invest in the person, not the outcome. You’re not there to land a job on the spot—you’re planting seeds. Focus on learning about who they are, not what they can do for you.
✨ Shift the spotlight. You don’t have to be the most interesting person in the room. Get curious. Ask them to share their story. Most people light up when someone genuinely wants to know more.
✨ Do it your way. 1:1 chats, handwritten notes, community events—there’s no “right” format. Prioritize what feels most comfortable for you.
✨ Follow up with care. Thank-you notes, sharing a resource, or connecting them with someone in your network can go a long way.
Release the pressure to "network" and let connection unfold at a human pace. And when you’re ready, think of one person you admire and start a conversation in a way that feels true to you. A small, genuine action is all it takes.
In solidarity,
Katie
